Wine-growing area in the Eisack valley, South Tyrol

Pacher-Hof vineyard’s wine-grower

South Tyrol’s Eisack valley
In the Eisack valley, South Tyrol’s and, at the same time Italy’s, most northern wine-growing area, vines are planted on 250 hectares. Today mainly white wine is produced in the Eisack valley. However, until about 1950, 80% of wines produced were red.
The Eisack valley’s vineyards are favourably located on the steep slopes of the southern sides of the valley. The soil conditions with their mixture of sand, shingle and gravel have an advantageous effect on the quality of the grapes. The white wines of the Eisack valley in fact face difficult but good pre-conditions that essentially form their character. Fresh, chilly nights, warm to hot days and good ventilation contribute to the fruity, subtle aromas of the white wines, and give them their classy style, individual, dry tartness and a taste of attractive robustness.

Wine-growing South Tyrol
South Tyrol’s vineyards cover an area of a little more than 5,000 hectares. The white variety of grape grows in more than 45% of South Tyrol’s vineyards. This tendency is growing. Ruländer/Pinot grigio, Pino Blanc and Chardonnay spearhead South Tyrol’s white wines with a share of about 60%. But also nowhere else in Italy do the other white varieties, such as Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Sauvignon, Grüner Veltliner or Kerner produce such fruity-fresh, typical wines full of character. They also form the basis for South Tyrol’s high-quality Sekt.
